Where can I take an injured animal?
Most veterinarian surgeries in Darwin and the rural area will accept injured wildlife. They will assess the animal and then call Wildcare to care for the animal.
What do I do if I find an injured or abandoned baby possum and cannot take it to the veternarian?
Keep it in a pillowslip or something similar in a warm, dark and quiet place away from pets and noise – not in air-conditioning. If it is a baby without fur it needs to be kept warm so place a bottle of hot water wrapped in a towel next to it Offer water only to babies and fruit and water to adults. If possible put it back in the tree in a container with a hole in the bottom and check to see if the parents return. If you need to remove the bird keep it somewhere warm, dark and quiet – not in air-conditioning. Offer drops of warm water only. The smell of human touch does not stop the parent bird from returning. What can I do about possums in my roofspace?
Go to the possum fact sheet for information of how to prevent possum access. Possums should not be removed from properties and it is cruel to dump them in the bush. Blocking of access to the roof is the most effective solution.
What do I do if I find an injured snake?
Call snake rescue on Wildcare do not do snake rescues though we do rescue all other wildlife including flying foxes.
What do I do about a flying fox caught on a fence?
Flying foxes cannot be handled. Place a damp towel over the flying fox to keep it cool and call Wildcare on 08 89886121 or 0408885341 immediately.
